Pea Harvest

How did you spend your Memorial Day Weekend?  I spent mine shucking peas. The weather was perfect on Saturday, and I did our second picking.  The first picking was last week, and they were good!  This is our best pea harvest ever.

My method of creating the pea row worked great.  The old tomato stalks provided a type of fence keeping the vines up off the ground and the hay provided shade keeping them cool.  When I folded the vines back, they were full of peas.

Wild Phlox

We planted all the summer garden seeds today which is not much of a photo till they sprout.  So I will show off my Tall Phlox. I  gathered the seeds from the roadside and planted them in the yard.  They have spread all around now.  Aphids ate some this year, but the ladybug came to the rescue.

Plant Your Tomatoes on Derby Day

 

We planted most the summer seedlings on the Sunday after Derby (May 7th).   We do not usually put them out this early out here at Buzzard Roost (havin' been bitten by a frost after Derby more than once)  however, the long term forecast called for much rain and no frost, so we put them in.  We ended up with 3 rows of Celebrity Hybrid, our canning tomato, and 1 row of Old Heirlooms we had around.  We also have 3 rows of Anaheim chili peppers, 3 rows of Poblano chili and 2 rows of the California Wonder bell peppers.  We have another flat of bell peppers, but they are still small, and half the garden is full!

Seedlings of tomato, pepper and basil are coming along like gangbusters.  In addition to their green roof, they are sitting on top of new heating pads keeping them at temperature through the cool spring nights.  My peppers have never looked so happy so early!
