June Garden

We have had plenty of rain on the vegetables.  Most of the rows are weeded, and hay is on the tomatoes.

Squash have yellow leaves, maybe too much rain.  Back of cucumber row did not come up, maybe bad seeds?    Okra row is a bit spotty, maybe too early.  Everything else looks good, so far.

This is the year of the butterfly, they are thick on the flowers this year.

Summer Garden is Growing

Goods rains have given the summer garden a good start.  From RtoL, green beans, lima beans, squash and cucumber (you can hardly see them but they are up) pinto beans, okra, then the peppers, tomatoes and peas.

Much to my surprise we got a basket full of peas!  We planted late, but cool weather and lots of rain delievered a mess.  Lesson is you should go ahead and throw the peas in even if it is late.

Summer Garden is Planted.

We got the garden planted between the rain storms.  The photo shows (LtoR) 2 rows of peas (needing weeding) then 2 rows of tomatoes, 2 more of peppers and then all of David's nice straight rows with manure for the seeds:  Cucumber, Squash, Okra, Pinto and Green beans.  There is a circle of herbs in the front.  We got a nice inch of rain on the seeds, with more promised next week.  The tomatoes have been in since mid May, but have not grown much it has been so cool.  Peas liked the cool temps, and started blooming.

Below shows our nice patch of cilantro in the front right corner!

One more rose, the magic rose, bloomed before the freeze

Below is the garden harvest for Thanksgiving, before the freeze.  The veggies are under a row cover, so we will check them again to see if any survived.  For Thanksgiving I made a radish salad which was good if you add ranch dressing.  We cooked the turnips in butter instead of bacon and that was ok.  Finally, we steamed the bok choy and served with a teriyaki sauce.

Of course these were the sides for our turkey and my casseroles:  bean tamale and sweet potato gratin.  Jennifer brought her sourdough bread and Grandma's ginger cookies.

Finally got some rain on the Fall Garden.

We will have radish, turnips, lettuce, and bok choy for our Thanksgiving.

The turnips were reseeded from last years crop.
